* The season-long INDY NXT by Firestone title fight between Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR’s Nikita Johnson and HMD Motorsports’ Enzo Fittipaldi and Tymek Kucharczyk enters its final stretch as the series heads to Portland International Raceway. Johnson, who has a pair of wins in his first full season in the series, leads Fittipaldi, who has a season-best four wins, by a single point with Kucharczyk 25 points behind the lead. The ultra-competitive 2026 season has seen eight winners in 13 races and 10 different drivers finish on the podium. Among the 10 podium finishers is Portland native Josh Pierson of Andretti Global.
* The INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix of Portland will be the series’ 24th race at Portland International Raceway. Jacob Abel, the 2024 winner at Portland, is the only former winner entered. Previous Indy NXT by Firestone winners at Portland include Paul Tracy, Andre Ribeiro, Greg Moore, Pato O’Ward, Rinus VeeKay, David Malukas, Kyle Kirkwood, Louis Foster, Abel and Dennis Hauger.
What Honda wants you to know:
* Pursuing Palou: Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou extended his championship lead the last time out with a victory at Nashville Superspeedway. The Honda-powered Spaniard now holds an 83-point margin in the title fight with six races remaining in the season. Palou is looking for his fifth NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship, and fourth straight. Palou has twice clinched the championship at Portland International Raceway, in 2023 and 2025, and while that is not mathematically possible this season, the reigning champ will be looking to bolster his points margin with a good result at the track.
* The Law of Averages: Palou and Kyle Kirkwood boast the highest average finishes in the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season. Palou’s five victories on the year give him an average finish of 5.833. While Kirkwood has only one victory to his name thus far, the Andretti Global driver from Florida has the most top 10 finishes of anyone in the series in 2026—finishing outside the top 10 just once in 12 races, giving him an average finish of 6th. Kirkwood sits third in the IndyCar title fight, just four points out of second place.
* Keeping Portland weird: Honda teams and drivers have three wins at Portland International Raceway since the series returned in 2018, Palou’s victories in 2023 and 2021 (a Honda 1-4 sweep), and a Honda podium sweep led by Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s Takuma Sato in 2018. Honda’s first Portland win came in 1996, via a 1-2 finish for Alex Zanardi and Gil de Ferran. Zanardi won again in 1998. Honda drivers swept the 1999 podium in Portland, with de Ferran winning, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya and Dario Franchitti. De Ferran repeated as race winner in 2000.
* The busy stretch: The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is finishing the 2026 season with an incredible six races over five weeks, crisscrossing North America, starting with this weekend’s OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland. Included in that stretch are two new tracks—Markham and Washington DC—and a doubleheader event at the Milwaukee Mile before the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca the first weekend of September.

What Chevrolet wants you to know:
Team Penske’s David Malukas, who is still looking for his first career NTT INDYCAR SERIES win, has moved into second place in the title fight after a season-saving drive at Nashville Superspeedway. The 24-year-old recovered after hard contact in practice ended with a trip to the hospital, driving from 25th to third place in the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix. Team Chevy’s winners on the season, Christian Lundgaard (Arrow McLaren), Pato O’Ward (Arrow McLaren) and Josef Newgarden (Team Penske) sit in fourth, fifth and sixth place, making four of the top-six in the title fight Chevrolet-powered drivers.
Chevrolet-powered drivers have won nine times at Portland International Raceway, including four of the seven races since the series returned to the Pacific Northwest in 2018.
Bowtie-badged drivers have also won four of the seven poles since 2018, with Santino Ferrucci (A.J. Foyt Racing) and Lundgaard grabbing the top spot in qualifying the last two years.
Team Penske has 12 podiums at Portland International Raceway, including six since 2018.

What Meyer Shank wants you to know:
Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) returns to road-course competition this weekend as the NTT INDYCAR SERIES heads west for the OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland. Round 13 of the championship takes place on the 12-turn, 1.967-mile Portland International Raceway (PIR), where drivers will tackle 110 laps (216 miles) around one of the series’ most technical circuits.
MSR arrives in Portland looking to continue its strong form after Felix Rosenqvist charged from 17th to fifth in the most recent event at Nashville Superspeedway. The team has been competitive on road courses in the past, recording 11 top-10 finishes in 14 starts during the 2025 season, while both MSR entries finished inside the top 10 at Portland one year ago.
PIR is one of Rosenqvist’s strongest venues on the calendar. The Swede has finished on the Portland podium twice, including runner-up finishes in 2019 and 2023, and qualified second at the circuit last season. This weekend, the No. 60 SiriusXM Honda will once again feature a special Grateful Dead Radio (XM Ch. 23) livery after debuting the fan-favorite design at Portland in 2025. This year’s design celebrates Jerry Garcia and The Days Between, a nine day celebration between Jerry Garcia’s birthday on August 1 and the anniversary of his death on August 9.
Armstrong comes into the weekend eager to rebound after an engine issue ended his Nashville race early. The New Zealander has established himself as one of the series’ strongest young road-course racers, recording top-10 finishes in seven of his 10 road-course starts with MSR. Armstrong’s career-best Portland finish was a fifth place in 2024. The weekend will also debut a new livery for Armstrong, who will showcase a striking green and black OnlyBulls design on his No. 66 Honda.
The OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland takes the green flag Sunday at 4:00 p.m. ET on FOX, with INDYCAR Radio providing live coverage throughout the weekend on SiriusXM Channel 218. Qualifying airs Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET on FS1.
