NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship facts

* Alex Palou leads the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship with five races to go for the fifth time in his INDYCAR SERIES career. He also led the championship with five races to go in his championship-winning seasons in 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Palou, who took the points lead at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach in April, has led the point standings after 10 of the 13 races this season.

* There are 12 drivers still mathematically eligible for the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship: Alex Palou, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, Pato O’Ward, Felix Rosenqvist, Josef Newgarden, Scott McLaughlin, Marcus Ericsson, Rinus VeeKay, Will Power and Scott Dixon. Any driver who trails the points leader by 216 points or more following the race will be eliminated from contention.

* Since 2008 when INDYCAR SERIES racing unified under the NTT INDYCAR SERIES banner, the eventual series champion has won the 14th race of the season six times. The most recent occurrence was 2025 when Alex Palou won at Laguna Seca. He also won the 14th race of 2021 at Portland. Other drivers to win the 14th race of their championship season were Ryan Hunter-Reay (2012), Dario Franchitti (2009 and 2010) and Scott Dixon (2008).

* From 2009-2019, the eventual NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion won the Toronto race six times. Dario Franchitti won in 2009 and 2011. Ryan Hunter-Reay won in 2012, Scott Dixon swept both races in 2013 and won the single race in 2018, and Josef Newgardenwon in 2017. Seven other drivers have claimed the INDYCAR SERIES championship in the same season they won at Toronto: Bobby Rahal (1986), Al Unser Jr. (1990), Michael Andretti (1991), Alex Zanardi (1998), Cristiano da Matta (2002), Paul Tracy(2003) and Sebastien Bourdais (2004).

Key championship point statistic: Since 2008, the championship leader with five races to go has gone on to win the championship 11 times. Those drivers were: Scott Dixon (2008, 2018 and 2020), Dario Franchitti (2011), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2012), Simon Pagenaud (2016), Josef Newgarden (2019) and Alex Palou (2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025).

Point differential: The 110 points that separate Alex Palou and Kyle Kirkwood are the second-largest point margin since INDYCAR SERIES racing was unified in 2008. Before this season, the average lead with five races to go since 2008 was 48.8 points.

* The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham will be the 14th race of the 2026 season. * Drivers who have won poles at Toronto entered in this year’s race are Will Power (2011, 2015), Scott Dixon (2013 Race 2, 2016), Josef Newgarden (2018) and Christian Lundgaard (2023). The polesitter has won the race nine times since the first race in 1986, most recently by Colton Herta in 2024.

* Chip Ganassi Racing has won eight times at Toronto: Michael Andretti (1994), Alex Zanardi (1998), Dario Franchitti (2009, 2011) and Scott Dixon (2013 both races, 2018, 2022). Team Penske has five wins at the track: Paul Tracy (1993), Will Power (2010, 2016), Josef Newgarden (2017) and Simon Pagenaud (2019). What Chevrolet wants you to know:

Chevrolet-powered drivers have made 18 trips to the top step of the podium, including last year when Pato O’Ward (Arrow McLaren) won at Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario.

Chevrolet-powered drivers have stood on the podium 50 times. Al Unser Jr. and Danny Sullivan lead all drivers on Canadian soil with six podiums, while Team Penske’s 16 top-three finishes are the best among the teams.

The 14th race of the season is the second in a tough stretch of six races across five weekends. The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham is the second of three brand-new street circuits, following a March race in Arlington, Texas and followed by next week’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.

What Honda wants you to know:

*  The NTT INDYCAR SERIES travels to a brand-new street circuit this weekend for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham. Markham, Ontario is a suburb of Toronto and home to more than 300,000 people. As with all the new circuits in IndyCar, preparation for this event begins in the simulator. HRC US’s Driver-In-The-Loop simulator provides our teams and drivers with the best tools available to prepare them for the unknowns of new circuits like Markham. *  6ix on the season: Alex Palou scored his sixth win of the season last time out at Portland International Raceway, as part of an all-Honda podium, further extending his championship lead to 110 points—11 more points than he had over his competitors at this same point last year. Palou became the third driver in NTT INDYCAR SERIES history to have back-to-back seasons with six or more wins. His previous victories this season have come at St. Petersburg, Barber, the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, Detroit and Nashville. Palou is looking for his first win north of the border this weekend at Markham, having a best finish of second on the streets of Toronto.

*  Street smarts: Honda teams and drivers have won at every street circuit so far in 2026, including three all-Honda podium sweeps, making up four of Honda’s eight wins on the year. Palou took the win at St. Petersburg, as well as leading Honda podium sweeps at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach and Detroit. While Kyle Kirkwood led an all-Honda podium in the inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington. Honda has been the dominant manufacturer on street courses in recent IndyCar history—taking wins at all five streets circuit events in 2023, and at three of four in both 2024 and 2025. The impressive showing at street circuits this year has helped Honda amass a strong lead in the manufacturers’ championship, 1129-996.

*  Due North: While the Markham street circuit is a new endeavor for IndyCar, Honda-powered drivers and teams have a history of success in the Toronto area, winning 13 times in both CART and INDYCAR competition, most recently with Colton Herta leading home a Honda 1-7 in the 2024 edition of the race—completing three race wins in a row for Honda in Toronto. Christian Lundgaard won the 2023 event, his first NTT INDYCAR SERIES win, while Scott Dixon scored his fourth win on the streets of Toronto in 2022. Dario Franchitti, Will Power, Michael Andretti, Alex Zanardi and Adrian Fernandez have also scored wins for Honda on the streets of Exhibition Place.

Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) heads north of the border this weekend as the NTT INDYCAR SERIES debuts a brand-new venue for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham. After decades of racing at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto, the annual Canadian event moves to the Streets of Markham for 2026. The new temporary circuit, located approximately 20 miles north of Toronto, features a 12-turn, 2.19-mile layout with a double-sided pit lane.

MSR arrives in Canada with momentum after Felix Rosenqvist delivered a pole and runner-up finish last weekend at Portland International Raceway. The result moved Rosenqvist to sixth in the championship standings and marked his third podium of the season.

Rosenqvist has enjoyed success on temporary street circuits throughout his INDYCAR career, recording eight top-five finishes and three podiums. His most recent street-course outing delivered a pole and second-place finish at Long Beach earlier this season. Rosenqvist also brings a strong history from the former Toronto circuit, where he earned a podium in 2022 and qualified third in 2024. This weekend, the No. 60 SiriusXM Canada Honda will feature Canadian rock band Three Days Grace alongside SiriusXM Octane (Ch. 37).

Marcus Armstrong heads to Markham looking to turn the page after another engine failure ended his Portland race early. The New Zealander has seven career top-ten finishes on street courses and recorded a podium in Detroit in 2023. Armstrong also found success on the streets of Toronto, finishing fifth in 2024 and qualifying third last season. The No. 66 SiriusXM Canada Honda will carry a special Rolling Stone Canada livery for the inaugural Markham event.

MSR is eager to beef up its INDYCAR street-course stats which sit at two poles, one podium and 16 top-ten finishes. The move to Markham is one of four new venues on the 2026 INDYCAR schedule and marks the second of five consecutive race weekends for the series.

The 90-lap Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham takes the green flag Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET on FOX, with INDYCAR Radio providing live coverage throughout the weekend on SiriusXM Channel 218. Qualifying airs Saturday at 2:25 p.m. ET on FS1.
