A recent rental car experience led NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Flyin’ Ryan Oehler to serve up some excitement to those seeking a drag racing experience.
“We rented a Hellcat and took it to Showtime Dragstrip near Clearwater for some racing,” said Oehler, who made laps against the clock with some friends. “I got a message from the rental car company saying ‘Hey, we’re monitoring the car’s location, tirespin, speed, etc to make sure you’re not racing the car, blah, blah, blah…
“I figured they were bluffing, so we made qualifying laps and then started eliminating.”
Number one qualifier Oehler was smoked in the first round by last place Robert “Sandbagger” Paparo of Nut Scentz, who magically found pace on raceday.
On the sidelines early, Oehler had time to ponder how many other’s good times were tempered by the oversight of Big Brother. He got together with his PSM sponsor Jim Gottman and Tampa Bay Race Rentals was born. 2020 Mustang GTs were purchased and now the great unwashed general public will get to experience the thrill of the sport for themselves as they race the ponies down the dragstrip.
“We are thrilled to get to bring an experience such as Tampa Bay Race Rentals to the Clearwater area,” Oehler said. “Some of the best times I have had with my buddies has been drag racing door cars down the dragstrip. Whether it was for a bachelor party or corporate event, the thrill of competition provided memories that will last a lifetime. Even my wife Laura (Oehler) got into it!”
Located less than 5 miles from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, this experience will cater to not only the Clearwater community, but also the heavy tourism traffic that comes to enjoy the amenities of the area.
“Jim and I have thought about every detail when it comes to the overall drag racing experience Tampa Bay Race Rentals will provide,” Oehler continued. “It is a family environment and will have a little something for everyone.”
Oehler and Gottman will be joining Robert Paparo of Nut Scentz at his meet and greet Thursday, March 11thfrom 7pm-10pm est. at Hooters in Gainesville, Florida to officially launch Tampa Bay Race Rentals prior to the NHRA season opener. The meet and greet and launch party are open to the general public.
Oh, and when Oehler returned the well-raced Hellcat, he was given a hearty “Thank you and please rent from us anytime!”
